How To Install a Garage Door

Installing a garage door can be a great project for a do-it-yourselfer who is handy with tools and has a free weekend to tackle the job. The following instructions are generalized instructions for installing a new sectional garage door – some points might vary slightly from door to door. Specific instructions for the door you are installing can be acquired from the manufacturer of your garage door – this is intended as a general guide to the steps required.

Before you get started, you’ll want to make sure you have all of the necessary materials and tools so you can complete the job without needing to make a run to the hardware store. It is also very important to make sure that your new garage door will fit the opening you currently have for it.

Required Tools and Supplies

  1. Drill
  2. Hammer
  3. Level
  4. Screwdrivers
  5. Pliers
  6. Spring winding bars
  7. C-clamps
  8. Socket wrench
  9. Ladder
  10. Tape measure
  11. 16-penny nails

Step 1: Install The First Panel

Set the bottom panel of the door into the door opening, making sure that the weatherstrip is on the bottom edge of the panel. Use a level to make sure that the panel is even. Once it is in place and is level, hammer nails at an angle into the jambs on each side of the door to hold it in place. Install the hinges on the top edge of the door panel.

Step 2: Install The Vertical Door Tracks

Following the included instructions with your garage door, assemble the vertical portion of the garage door tracks and secure them to the door frame.

Step 3: Attach The First Panel To The Door Tracks

Install the rollers into the first door section, then place the rollers into the door tracks.

Step 4: Install The Second Panel

Insert the rollers into the second panel. Place the second panel on top of the first panel. Insert the second panel’s rollers into the door tracks, then attach the hinges on the first panel to the second panel as well. Install hinges on the top of the second panel.

Step 5: Install The Third Panel

Using the same procedure – install the rollers into the third panel and place it on top of the second panel. Insert the rollers into the garage door tracks, then attach the hinges to the third door panel. Once this is done – the door should be checked with the level again to make sure it is even and the door tracks should be checked with the level to make sure they are even as well.

Step 6: Install The Horizontal Door Tracks

Assemble the horizontal and curved sections of the door tracks and attach them to the vertical sections. If necessary, you can hold them in place with a ladder or other object that is high enough to reach them. Check the horizontal tracks with the level.

Step 7: Install The Track Hangers

Install the track hangers on the ceiling of the garage. Make sure that they are tightly attached to a ceiling joist since they will need to support the weight of the garage door. Once the track hangers are installed, you can attach the horizontal tracks to them. Make sure that the tracks are lined up evenly from the front to the back of the garage.

Step 8: Install The Springs and Cables

Depending on the type of springs you have, this procedure will vary. Refer to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your garage door. Please be advised that if you have torsion springs for your garage door, this portion of the installation can be very dangerous if done incorrectly and may result in serious injury or damage to your property. If you’re not sure about what you’re doing, it is strongly advised that you consult a professional for assistance.
